T-Mobile and Jio Switch On the World's First 5G Standalone Roaming in 2026 - What Changes for US-India Travelers

For years, "5G roaming" has mostly meant a 5G icon sitting on top of a 4G core network. On 21 September 2026, T-Mobile and India's Jio announced the first real exception.

What happened

T-Mobile and Jio said they achieved the world's first 5G Standalone (SA) roaming connection, enabled through interoperability with Syniverse, whose mediation platform connects the two networks. The announcement, published by T-Mobile's newsroom and picked up by Business Standard and others, confirms:

  • T-Mobile customers traveling to India can use 5G SA roaming on Jio's network.
  • Jio customers traveling to the US can roam on T-Mobile's 5G SA network.
  • The link runs through Syniverse's platform, including its SEPP (Security Edge Protection Proxy), the security gateway 5G SA roaming requires between operators.
  • Syniverse says it can support other 5G-ready operators "from validation through production as more operators come on board."

T-Mobile's chief network officer Ankur Kapoor summed up the promise as leaving one country, landing in another, and keeping a seamless 5G experience.

Why "Standalone" matters

Most 5G roaming today is Non-Standalone (NSA): your phone may show 5G, but the call control and core network are still 4G. Standalone 5G uses a native 5G core end to end. The companies say this brings faster speeds, lower latency and more reliable connections, and opens the door to features that NSA cannot deliver well, such as network slicing and more consistent real-time apps.

For a traveler, the practical gains are video calls that stutter less, faster uploads of photos and reels, and business apps that behave more like they do at home.

The reality check

This is a milestone, not a global rollout. Earlier this year we reported that 5G SA roaming was arriving while most operators admitted they were not ready. Today's news proves the technology works commercially, but on one corridor, between two operators.

A few caveats worth knowing:

  • You need both sides. Your home carrier and the visited network must have a 5G SA roaming agreement in place, plus a compatible phone and plan.
  • It covers one route for now: US to India and India to US.
  • It does not lower roaming prices. The announcement is about network quality, not tariffs. Carrier roaming passes still cost what they cost.

What it means for travel eSIM users

Travel eSIMs connect abroad through roaming agreements too, usually those of the operator that issues the eSIM profile. That means travel eSIM users will see 5G SA only when their provider's underlying network partners sign similar agreements. For now, most travel eSIMs deliver 4G or 5G NSA, and that is still more than enough for maps, messaging, streaming and hotspot use.

We broke this down provider by provider in which travel eSIMs actually give you 5G abroad.

Practical advice for your next trip

  • Heading to India on T-Mobile? Check that your phone supports 5G SA and that your plan includes international data. You may be among the first to try it.
  • Price-sensitive? A prepaid travel eSIM such as those from Airalo, Holafly or HOLASIM usually costs far less than a carrier day pass for trips longer than a few days, even if it runs on 4G/5G NSA.
  • Do not chase the icon. A strong 4G signal on a good local network beats a weak 5G one. Coverage and the partner network matter more than the badge.
  • Keep your home SIM for calls and SMS and put data on the travel eSIM. Dual-SIM phones make this easy.

The bottom line

T-Mobile and Jio have shown that true 5G roaming is technically and commercially possible. As more operators connect their 5G SA cores through hubs like Syniverse, the gap between "5G at home" and "5G abroad" will narrow, and travel eSIM providers will inherit those upgrades through their network partners. Until then, compare coverage and price for your destination, not the letter next to the signal bars.
