eSIM Downloads Did in Six Months of 2026 What They Did in All of 2025 - and China Is a Big Reason Why

Consumer eSIM adoption just had a very big half-year. New data from the Trusted Connectivity Alliance (TCA), reported by Telecom Reseller, shows that worldwide consumer eSIM profile downloads in the first half of 2026 reached nearly the same volume as in all of 2025.

What the numbers say

The headline is simple: six months of 2026 produced almost as many consumer eSIM profile downloads as the entire previous year. TCA attributes a large part of the jump to China, where operators received regulatory approval to offer eSIM services in October 2025. That decision opened one of the largest smartphone markets to consumer eSIM, and the effect shows up clearly in the first-half data.

China is not the whole story. TCA says adoption also kept rising across North America and Europe, and in emerging markets in the Middle East and Africa and in South America. A second figure points to the infrastructure behind the trend: the number of eSIM Subscription Manager platforms supporting profile downloads under the IoT eSIM specification in the first half of 2026 was five times higher than the number recorded during all of 2025.

A note on interpretation: these are download counts reported by TCA members, not a count of active users or of travelers, and the source does not break out travel eSIMs. We are not claiming travel demand grew by the same amount.

Why this matters for travelers

More phones and carriers supporting eSIM has practical consequences when you cross a border.

First, compatibility keeps improving. The more markets that allow consumer eSIM, the more new phones ship with eSIM support as standard, and the more likely it is that the phone in your pocket can install a travel plan. Second, carriers that once treated eSIM as a niche feature now have operational experience provisioning it at scale, which tends to make activation faster and less error-prone. Third, a bigger installed base makes eSIM the default mental model for staying connected abroad, which is reflected in how many travelers are already choosing eSIM over roaming.

China deserves a separate note. Even as domestic eSIM grows there, visitors should check the current rules before they fly, because adoption among local operators does not automatically mean a foreign traveler can buy and activate one on arrival. Confirm the rules for your destination, and confirm that your phone is unlocked and eSIM-capable.

What to do before your next trip

A few checks take only a few minutes:

  1. Confirm your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked.
  2. Install your travel eSIM on home Wi-Fi before departure, but only activate data on arrival if the plan starts on first connection.
  3. Keep your home SIM or eSIM active for calls and verification codes, and turn off data roaming on it.
  4. Save the provider's support contact offline, in case you need help abroad.

If you want a plan sorted before you land, HOLASIM sells data eSIMs for most popular destinations that install by QR code or link, and you can compare against what your carrier charges using our guide to eSIM vs roaming.

The bottom line

The TCA data confirms that eSIM has moved from early-adopter feature to mainstream mobile standard, with China acting as an accelerator. For travelers, the practical effect is simple: it is getting easier every month to land in another country with a data plan already installed on your phone.
